Africana Posters

This is the first collection that organized. It consisted of propaganda and other public posters from all over Africa. They were already processed and cataloged so they required that I simply put them in order and in their specific sized box. This proved to be more challenging than I thought as the collection consisted of over 700 posters. It was also not repressed in the catalog, which meant the public could still request them for use. This led to a consistent missing poster issue as I couldn't find some of them and had to go find where they were. Some of the Africana posters were still returning to the old reading room on my last day of work. This specific collection however came in hand for one of my classes. I took a class on the history of South Africa and was doing a project on Albert Luthuli. In this collection, I was able to handle and study some of the African National Congress's promotion posters and pamphlets on Luthuli's presidency. It not only helped my project but my general enjoyment of the class as the information was applicable to my internship too. This collection took about a month to finish and was finally sent to remote storage after I made labels for the boxes.

Top Picture: An example of the anti-apartheid propaganda. It was published in about 10 different languages.

Second Picture: These papers are the catalog records that were paperclipped to the posters (not safe for the posters) and were used to identify and number them after the info was verified on the catalog site.

Far Right Picture: These are the type of boxes that the posters were put in. There are many different sizes (only one is seen in the pic). Ones that are too large to fit in boxes are labeled, put in clean non acidic folders (in order), and put back in the map cases.

Middle Picture: This is another example of one of the posters. For this one the catalog record was not on it. So, I had to do research on the poem and find a title to find the poster in the catalog online.
